The benefits are less strict hours, but to balance that part out - you must be very motivated to be the best you can be and to manage yourself. Large companies offer stability (usually), but the sameness of the work and the challenge to rise within the company can be difficult. Smaller companies offer responsibility and ground floor opportunities, but who knows what the future holds for that company? Still, if you can afford the risk - small company work or contract work is something everyone in the IT field should expose themselves to.
