Fake electrical products often come from China and have not been tested to the level of safety that is required in the U.S. This is why you will often find them at a ridiculously low price. As with many other products, the old adage “you get what you pay for” definitely applies to electrical products.

The CPSC has established relationships with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security and the Chinese government to stop the flow of these dangerous electrical products into the U.S. However, the CPSC has recalled more than a million counterfeit electrical products in the past few years.

Although it is very difficult to determine if an electrical product is fake, as a consumer, you need to be extremely careful when purchasing products such as extension cords, power strips, lighting fixtures and the like. By following these tips provided by the CPSC, you may be able to spot counterfeit, and possibly, defective products:

    · Know your product packaging and labels. The Internet is a good resource for this. If you see any variation in the logo or the packaging, the product may be a fake.

    · Look for the product testing laboratories certification label, such as the UL Underwriters Laboratories.

    · Be familiar with your source. So-called “dollar stores”, flea markets, and online retailers are an excellent outlet for these fake products.

    · Knowledge is the key. Not all product recalls are big enough to hit the national news so you should register with the CPSC for their email alerts. They will notify you of all product recalls as they occur.

    · Report all defective product to the manufacturer, if possible, or the CPSC.

Once you sign up for the product safety alerts from the CPSC, you will be amazed at the number of defective products that are recalled. One such example is the Halogen Light sold at Lowe’s, manufactured in China and recalled on May 9, 2007. As luck would have it, there were no injuries reported with this product as of the date of the recall.
