The headline is the first thing your prospect sees when he or she looks at your advertisement. When you write a press release, what is your ultimate goal? No doubt, getting the information to as many publications and on as many Web sites as possible. The focus lies in moving outward… taking the press release to as many *other* sources as possible. We buy lists of journalists, pay public relations companies to distribute the release to thousands of targeted leads, use online press release distribution services, and create our own in-house list of reporters to touch base with. This isthe “standard” route that press release distribution takes. However, we generally don’t think about how these releases can work for us in other ways. For instance, have you considered the fact that adding your press releases to your own site can increase your visibility and boost your lead generation efforts? How? Because press releases can open new avenues for search engine spiders and site visitors to find you.Writing A Search-Engine-Friendly ReleasePress releases have some unique characteristics that can contribute to an increase in search engine positioning for your site. They are similar in many ways to pages that use search engine copywriting techniques. That makes them the perfect addition t It’s an advertisement for your advertisement. The only purpose of your headline is to get your prospect to continue reading your ad or sales letter. It must get your reader’s attention and it must pull them into your ad. Your headline must be so irresistible that your reader has to find out more. It doesn’t make a difference how good your product or service is or how good your advertising copy is, if your headline isn’t any good, your ad or sales letter won’t get read. Let’s take a look at what two legendary copywriters have to say about the importance of good headlines: “Advice to copywriters: When you are assigned to write an ad, write a lot of headlines first. Spend hours writing headlines -- or days if necessary. If you can come up with a good headline, you are almost sure to have a good ad. But even the greatest writer can’t save an ad with a poor headline.” --John Caples “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. If you haven’t done some selling in your headline, you have wasted 80 percent of your money. The wickedest of all sins is to run an advertisement without a headline.” -- David Olgilvy It never ceases to amaze me how many advertisements I see that don’t have headlines. All advertisements should have a headline. Let’s talk about the rules you should follow when writing headlines, the different types of headlines you can use, proven words to use in headlines, and how you can become an expert at writing headlines. Rules to follow when writing headlines: 1. First and foremost, your headline must appeal to your reader’s self interest. Communicate the strongest benefit (or benefits) to your prospect. Yet I discern two very different connotations. Is this a matter of semantics? Or is there an important distinction to be made?According to government statistics, “small businesses” comprise the vast majority of enterprises across North America, most of which close their doors before their fifth anniversary. What is more interesting to me is that I have never seen a government study that discusses the flailing “entrepreneur.” Then again, perhaps the only people who write about entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs.I have an admission to make. I expect less from a small business owner than I do from a self-proclaimed entrepreneur. Think about it this way: if you were just introduced to someone at a local networking event, and he asked what you do, which of the following answers are you most likely to give?“Hi. My name is Joe. I’m a small business owner.”OR“Hi. My name is Joe. I’m an entrepreneur.”The first statement feels a bit more comfortable, doesn’t it? The second one, however, conveys a forthrightness that seems to presuppose a certain level of professional achievement. It is too bad that so many “small business” people are reluctant to admit as much to themselves or to their colleagues.Yet the presupposition of success—to know precisely what “success” looks like and then to act as if you have already arrived—is precisely what separates the boys Let’s take a look at what two legendary copywriters have to say about the importance of good headlines: “Advice to copywriters: When you are assigned to write an ad, write a lot of headlines first. The Federal Trade Commission reports that for the 5th year in a row identity theft topped the list of consumer complaints. In this article we will explore what identity theft is, how it is most commonly perpetrated, and how big of a threat it really is to the average consumer.Credit Card Fraud versus Identity Theft When someone illegally obtains your credit card information and uses it then that is credit card fraud. It is not identity theft in the purest sense but when the government estimates the number of identity theft victims and the financial impact of identity theft it generally includes this number. The term most commonly used now is Identity Fraud which broadens the scope to include credit card fraud. In 2006 the total estimated cost of identity fraud was $56.6 billion, up from $54.4 billion in 2005. Credit card fraud accounts for approximately 26% of identity theft. The balance of identity theft is comprised mostly of new account identity theft, where your personal information is compromised to the point where the thief is able to establish new accounts (bank, credit card, utilities) in your name. This type of theft can have a devastating effect on an individual's life and can take years and thousands of dollars to clean up and restore your good name. Here's a couple of examples:You buy trousers, the salesperson offers you the shirt, tie, cufflinks, shoes… You buy a computer, the sales person offers you a printer, scanner, software… When done well cross-selling will dramatically improve your sales, profits and customer satisfaction. Done poorly it will drive customers away in their droves. The first time I told my wife about this concept she was scathing – “all those *?$% sales people trying to sell you something you don’t want” (She doesn’t really swear – much). We chatted for a while without too much meeting of minds. So I told her a story. In days gone by you used to be able to walk into a hardware store, walk up to a counter and be greeted by a real person (this is before the days of big supermarkets and anonymous self-service). The conversation might go something like this:You: 5 litres of white exterior gloss paint please.Sales: Certainly sir, here you go. The finish from this paint is helped a lot if you use good brushes – how are you fixed for brushes? You: Well, I haven’t looked for a while – I am really not sure.Sales: What are you going to paint? You: 3 doors and a couple of window frames.Sales: Umm, for window frames you are probably going to need a 1 inch brush for the detail and a 2in brush for the rest of Rules to follow when writing headlines: 1.
