Nobody can dispute that we, as humans, are capable of great depravity. Every day the news is full of terrible acts committed by criminals. Nor can forget those periods in history, such as Germany under the Nazis, when entire populations seemed to turn malevolent.

And yet I contend that the vast majority of people are basically good. Most of us are just trying to get through life without being hurt or hurting anyone else. We love our families and friends, make our mistakes, earn our livings, and follow our beliefs and pastimes. That just doesn’t make for good press. While each of us is capable of hurting others, most of us manage to live our lives never seriously harming another person. For a few of us, though, our upbringing might conspire with our environment and brain chemicals to make us more likely to commit criminal acts, but we would be in the minority.

That prejudice was often driven by the fact that people tended to have no contact with or understanding of persons who are different. At least in the U.S., prejudice seems to be diminishing in each generation. Some of that change can be attributed to our growing awareness and understanding of each other driven by the Internet and television. It’s difficult to hate others when we observe them behaving just like us. While faith can drive some to evil acts, the fact that more people are attending church than ever before is, overall, a positive trend. Growing middle classes in developing nations tend to cause people to be more peaceful and cooperative with each other.
