He or she will never again get anywhere near the assembly line. This is the education administrator who gives speeches about the joy of teaching but avoids classrooms; the one who loves tudents but hasn't tutored or substitute taught in years and who never will in the future. This form of burnout serves two purposes. First, it allows the person to go on working. Secondly, it insulates them from something they never want to do again but no one will ever know. It is the perfect escape. The danger to the company or organization with this type of promotion is that the person wants to stay above it all. Detached managers are not effective. The danger to the person is that the problem has not actually been solved. Escaping is not the same thing as developing a solution. Of course the hope would be that promotion serves to trigger a new beginning and that lessons will be learned so as to avoid flaming out in the new position.
