    Ruling The Roost
New website owners are doomed from the start if they know nothing about website optimisation, that is until they realise that there is a lot more to learn than just building a website. It is a learning process from start to finish and no one can relax and expect their business to continue without constant attention to what is going on in the world of cyberspace. Blogging is tops as far as the search engines are concerned BUT for how long ?Search engines like Google are fickle and what is in favour right now could suddenly take a tumble as

Why Aren't You in the Yellow Pages?
The Yellow Pages has been around for over 100 years, making it one of the oldest and most used media in the world. Yet there are many businesses that choose not to advertise. So what’s your excuse? There’s actually only three reasons:You are too cheap. You think your business won’t benefit. You actually never thought about it.Let’s examine each one. To begin with, have you ever had a Yellow Page representative give you all the rates, or did you just assume that they’re too expensive? Maybe you figu
When stress runs out of control it leads to burnout. No news that this is a workplace problem. Every increase in productivity comes about not by magic but by effort and intensity. The workforce pulls together, works hard, puts in long hours and concentrates. The standards are set high. Of course there is stress.

What is news, however, is that stress can lead to the loss of the highest motivated workers, managers and executives. The assumption would be otherwise. One would think the highest motivated people, especially among the ranks of managers and executives, would be the ones with the most staying power. But stress allowed to run out of control always goes in the same direction: burnout.

There are five types of burnout:

    Leaving the profession forever

    Above it all

    Trapped in a gilded cage

    Dead wood

    Helpless and hopeless.

The highest motivated persons are usually in the operation because that is what they love. These persons are easy to spot when they interview. They are the ones who always wanted to be a teacher, a minister, a doctor, a nurse, a computer whiz, a programmer, a scientist, an engineer. They read books and watched movies that portrayed what they dreamed of becoming. They worked hard at school. They went to college or technical school to achieve a foundation for what they planned on doing all their life.

Is It Just Me or is Business Getting Tougher?
Is it just me or is business getting tougher? Look around gas prices are rising and all the manufacturing jobs are going elsewhere? What should we do? The only thing certain about our economy today, is that it will look different tomorrow. How computers changed the economies of the 80's and 90's, today we deal with cheap foreign labor. The North American economy used to have an advantage in that we were well educated and technologically advanced. This allowed us to charge more, produce quicker and raise our standard of living. Margins were high w

Programming on a New Platform - The Earth
Since Google released Google Earth and, more importantly, its Google Map API, there is now a new platform -- the Earth -- on which for developers to write web applications. First, there are the "mashup" products on various web sites, such as those listed on MapBuilder.net.Now there are applications that take the Earth based programming to a new heights and scale that have not been reached before. Breaking into Women's Golf Apparel with Style
A fresh approach to club attireJennifer Glaspie launched Chicago-based Aphira golfware to create apparel for the social golfer who wants to stand out on the green, not fit into the club.by Carolyn SchwaarWhen novice golfer Jennifer Glaspie was kicked off the green at a Florida golf club for wearing a sleeveless, collarless sweater, she didn't know then that women's golf apparel would become her life's passion. From the runway to the fairwayIn 2000, Glaspie, a successful corporate business consultant at the prestigious

    Establishing Retention Guidelines
After you’ve completed the inventory of existing files, the next step is to establish user-friendly retention guidelines. Often, offices are glutted with paper and computer files because people using them aren’t given guidelines about what to keep and what to eliminate. Ironically, some organizations do have such guidelines, but they’re not communicated to the people who really need them, or not provided in a user-friendly form. One company I worked with had a guidebook that was nearly a hundred pages long, but poorly organized, and contained informati

These persons hit the ground running when they are hired. They come early, stay late, work during breaks, ask questions and emote enthusiasm. Sometimes they give union stewards a headache because they set the bar too high. They are not necessarily popular with coworkers or co-managers for the same reason. They may be respected but also resented. If you put them in charge of company events they will push, pull and prod everyone else into doing their part and more.

These are the mechanics who take the manuals home to study in their spare time. These are the teachers who come back on weekends to make their classrooms and labs more learning efficient. These are the persons who are happy to be doing what they are doing because it is their dream come true. They give it their all.

Therein lies the problem: they know no restraint and cannot pace themselves. They are like a plane going full throttle all the time, one speed only. In the beginning they usually get encouraged by whoever is in charge. Eventually they get feedback about pacing themselves and giving it a rest and thinking about the long haul. Good advice: those who hear it do well over the long haul. Those who ignore it mistake the advice as temptation to become mediocre. They misread and misintrepret the hints to slow down as signs of apathy.
