The Truth About Self Employment to the event? How many? The path to self employment is long and tough. If it was easy, everyone in the world would be doing it. While self employment is expanding throughout the world most people are still stuck working the dreadful nine to five job. Everyone must work to survive. Whether people want to hear that or not, it is true. Too many people today want to do less work for more money and well, that's just not working. However, it can be done. It will be challenging and it will be hard. There are pros and cons to being self employed and today this article will focus on both. The Pros: This is pretty obvious. Staying at home, setting your own hours and spending more time with your family are a good start. That's why most people take a leap of faith into the self employment world. However, did you ever think about how it would feel to create your own destiny. When you create your own employment you are essentially putting you and your family's destiny in your hands. While there is no ceiling holding down your success, there is also nobody there to bail you out if you fail. With that being said remember anything is possible. All these positive takes on self employment make the industry look very desirable, but the intent of this article is to show how hard it can be. So onto the cons. The Cons: This part is tough to write about. Once we as humans get out of fantasy land, we must tackle the tough issues of self employment. So what happens when we leave our nine to five job for self employment? Well sit down for this because it is not pretty. People often fail to realize the benefits they are giving up when they leave their employer. If you have to plan a prestigious event yourself, you might appreciate my guide on the aspects of arranging an event, from start to finish! The young man took his place behind the lectern, preparing to address the graduating class. He had earned the right to make this speech by having the best grade point average over the last four years. In addition to being the valedictorian he was graduating with academic honors. So were two thirds of the members of his class. It's not just this high school. I checked around a bit and found that grades appear higher and there are more "honors" graduates, even though official standards don't seem to have changed much. And it's not just high school. At Princeton, in 2003, 47 percent of the grades were A's. William Strauss and Neil Howe identified the generational cycle and its language in their classic 1991 book, Generations. They defined four kinds of generations, one of which they called "Civic." Members of a Civic generation "grow up as increasingly protected youth."The valedictorian and his classmates are members of a Civic generation variously called Generation Y or the Millennial Generation. And they're showing up in workplaces everywhere. They're the children of the Baby Boomers. Protection for them has taken some strange forms. Leave it to my generation, the Baby Boomers, to come up with beliefs about praise and reward that are both anti-establishment and result in some really dumb actions. One belief is that no one should be a "loser." That leads to sports leagues where kids play soccer, but no one keeps score.Or how about the corollary belief: everyone should be a winner? That gives us other sports leagues where everyone gets a trophy just for playing. Parents pay for them before the year begins. And there's the belief that no one, especially my darling 1. However, it's usually a time to make some necessary money for the following school year. One way that I've found to earn some great money, and which still allows for a good bit of freedom and time off is doing some painting. Although you'll make top dollar doing this, saying that you're going to save them time and money will draw them in like bees to honey. You can also post on boards in food stores, try your luck at putting some makeshift signs at busy intersections, etc. If you advertise, you'll get the work.Say you don't know anything about painting? Spend a little time at places like Sherwin Williams or other places that specialize in paints, and you'll soon know the difference between High Gloss, Satin, Semi-Gloss, Flat, and you'll definitely know if you're supposed to be using an Interior or Exterior Paint. You'll probably want to stay away from the Big Chains when it comes to getting information about painting because the quality of information that you get varies from store to store.Lastly, it will come in handy if you have access to a truck and ladders. How many?In the world of restaurant management you run into all types of people. That is what happens when you open the doors to the public. Some days are filled with ease and joy, but mostly the days are long and frustrating. Your quality of life is completely dependent on the quality of your operations. That in itself is sometimes an oxymoron. The top quality A caliber employee doesn't want to make minimum wage all their life. Keeping them motivated and happy requires a time and energy commitment that at times takes away from your ability to run a quality operation. Don't allow your self to get side tracked. Have a plan and work your plan. A man once said to me "a goal with out a plan is just a wish". If your goal is to have a good quality life outside of work and you truly enjoy the restaurant business, then have a plan everyday and work the plan. There are a number of ways to achieve your goal.1) Staff: Staffing will solve your employee wows. Competition for hours and work will give you the ability to make the tough decisions that will eventually improve your operations and your quality of life.2) Communication: This is a key component in any operation. Ensuring all employees, partners, and management team members are aware of changes, substitutions, additions will make daily operations run itself.3) Consistency: Each and every member of the management team has to handle situations in the same manner. If it is disciplinary actions for tardiness, rudeness, poor work performance, what ever the situation, it has to be consistent across the board.4) Muddy list: There can't be any unclear expectations or messages. If you have existing contacts that is fine but make sure you know they will be competent and “on message” - if in doubt contact an agency for advice (I recommend http://www.speakers-uk.com/ for no other reason that they will always spend time with you to make sure that you have a list of the right people at the right price).
