Then, in 1859, another German scientist, Albert Niemann (1834-1861), discovered and published an improved isolation and purification process which produced a compound he called "cocaine. He gained a PhD and his dissertation entitled “On a New Organic Base in the Coca Leaves” was published in March 1860. Among other things, his dissertation describes cocaine’s "colourless transparent prisms...Its solutions have an alkaline reaction, a bitter taste, promote the flow of saliva and leave a peculiar numbness, followed by a a sense of cold when applied to the tongue." Reference to the fact that he had discovered cocaine’s anaesthetic properties. Albert Niemann died a year later in what have been described as ‘mysterious circumstances’.
