    Network Security
Security is an essential part of maintaining any network and is the primary focus for a network administrator. While most people think that the main focus of a network administrator is to ensure that users can access data and other resources needed to perform their job functions, they don’t realize the work and attention needed to make certain all data is secure.End users are happy as long as they get the data they need and don’t have to jump through hoops to get to it. Account names and requiring passwords only serve to keep honest people honest. There are many ways to compromise an account’s security and any decent hacker usually knows more tricks of the trade than the network administrator. The use of authentication services and/or Biometrics can improve security, but only to a certain degree. If you’re responsible for a small operation, network security cannot be compromised. Hackers don’t discriminate; they’re looking for sensitive corporate or financial data that they can exploit. Customer and clients don’t discriminate; they’re entitled to the same service and reliability that they would get from a large corporation. When it comes to protecting your network, there is no room for compromise. You must block any and all threats flowing around the Internet. Especially look for viruses and other forms of malware that can compromise your network and end-user systems, which could lead to data loss and expensive downtime. Spam clogs up inboxes and e-mail servers that cost businesses billions of dollars each year. Spyware and network intrusions are designed and targeted to steal valuable information from specific companies which can impact revenue and a company’s reputation. Plishing attacks exploit user habits to steal personal information.Everyday security threats are being modified and refined, as hackers new conduits such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer connections, and wireless networks to deliver their attacks. In my opinion, the biggest headache for small businesses is the misuse of the Internet by employees. If a user visits an inappropriate site, sends or receives inappropriate content, or worse, violates confidentiality and leaks client information or company secrets, legal liability action is sure to follow. End user education needs to be top priority for all network administrators.Insiders aren’t the most common security problem, but they can be among the most damaging to a company’s reputation. Insider attacks against IT infrastructure are among the security breaches most feared by both government and corporate security professionals. If an employee is terminated, it’s crucial that all system access be revoked immediately. About half of all insider attacks take place between the time an IT employee is dismissed and their user privileges are taken away. I was in a situation where a co-worker was dismissed be
    PURPOSE OF ARTICLE

The Bible has much to say about depression; interestingly, the causes and solutions are not what are commonly thought in Christian circles. This article will offer insights that may help erase the stigma associated with depression and to see it in a new light. When seen correctly, there is no more stigma or shame associated with depression than any other illness.

    UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION

What is Depression: Depression is a prolonged emotional tone dominating an individual's outlook and mood. Normal moods of sadness, grief, and elation are typically short-lived and part of everyday life, but these can progress into a depressed mental state. Other symptoms often accompany depression but the most common symptoms of major depression are:1

    • deep sadness or emptiness,

    • apathy, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities,

    • agitation or restlessness, physical hyperactivity or inactivity,

    • sleep disturbances,

    • weight/appetite disturbances,

    • diminished ability to think or concentrate,

    • feelings of excessive guilt, self-reproach or worthlessness,

    • feelings of fatigue or loss of energy, and

    • morbid thoughts of death or suicide.

If a person experiences at least five of these symptoms for one month they have major depression. Mild depression would typically be defined as having two to four of these symptoms for over one month. Bipolar disorder (manic depression) includes swings from deeply depressive moods to wildly manic moods (elation, irritability, hostility, inflated thoughts of self, boasting)—with many intensities and variations.

Biblical Occurrences: Depression is the ascendancy and tyranny of our emotions over our lives. Thus, Proverbs 15:13 says, "A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken." Often an initiating discouragement leads to sadness, which leads to prolonged grief, and then into a downhill spiral to depression. Depression is a universal problem, but no one really knows if Biblical characters had what we call depression, or if it would be more appropriate to say they suffered emotionally. However, Paul in I Corinthians 10:13 says, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able...". Temptation can mean trial, calamity, or affliction. Accordingly, we should understand that our present day afflictions were also common to the great Bible characters.

Writers: The Truth About Advertising, Publicity, and PR
Many of us are trying to do business and don’t know how to define these words. We read articles and think, this could have just as easily been about me! We wonder why the reporter picked that person instead. We wonder how someone got into magazines and onto radio shows. We attribute big successes with an expensive publicist. We are not sure what a publicist does but since the guy on Entourage has one, they must be a good thing. Some of use have publicist and secretly wonder why they can’t get us on the Today Show or Good Morning America. We have written books and wonder why we are not on the Oprah book club/Advertising is something you pay for. Most of the time you have to come up with the content or copy. You need to hire a copywriter or take some training. There is more to getting people’s attention than a goofy picture. Advertising must be effective and have a call to action. You are asking the people to do something and they must be clear on what to do. Advertising has laws on what you can show and say. FCC rules in advertising will not apply to satellite radio, which is why Howard Stern is leaving regular radio. More and more people are choosing to keep out a lot of advertising by using pod casting and personalizing their media intake. Cell phone use to watch TV and communicate with people can make Generation X unreachable. Advertising is also so overbearing that people can tune it out if it does not directly speak to them.Writers must promote their book, even if they are published by large publishers. They must create a campaign that is book effective and within budget. Publicity and PR stretch those advertising dollars.

Usability and ROI: The Great Debate
Consider this true story. As product manager flew overseas to demonstrate his ground-breaking software application to an executive team in a multi-billion dollar company. Halfway into his demonstration, he got lost in the application’s interface and could not navigate his way out. The executives dismissed him, with an admonition to go back and fix his problems. For years, interface gurus have hotly debated the value of an application interface in term of return on investment. How much influence does usability have on an application’s ROI? Can a great interface possibly justify its expense? The answer is yes. Forward-thinking companies are finally realizing the importance of usability. "Usability is one of our secret weapons," says a representative from Schwab.com. The fact that usability consistently produces positive results will not be a secret much longer.A case in point: American Eagle Outfitters launched a redesigned, more user-centered Web site in March, 2001, and showed a 53.6% increase in sales the next month. Can that increase be directly attributed to usability? Usability research is limited in its ability to predict ROI simply because there are too many variables, leaving decision-makers skeptical of usability expenses.Usability guru Jakob Nielsen argues that starting with usability is key to increasing ROI. He estimates that gathering usability data early in the development process is ten times more effective than late usability data. "It's 100 times cheaper to make a change before any code has been written than it is to wait until after the implementation is complete," he states, but admits that such estimates do not equate to a standard ROI. "The two parameters are measured in different units," he argues, "Project cost is measured in money, and usability is measured in increased use, more efficient use, or high user satisfaction."Despite the paucity of strong evidence of ROI linked to usability, there is still a case to be made. Unusable products are unacceptable in the consumer-driven marketplace. "E-businessmen and women don’t always understand how all the aesthetic and technical aspects of a Web site must revolve first and foremost around the consumer, because without them, there would be no business," reminds Richard Feinberg, Professor of Retail Management at Purdue University.Jane Black notes that consumers are expecting exceptional usability because they’ve seen the potential available with "a high-powered PC and some imagination." Not to mention Arthur Andersen’s study which revealed that 83% of Internet users would likely leave a Web site that required too many clicks to get to what they were looking for. This extends to internal operations as well as e-commerce. A client of Brook Group, LTD, had the design firm create a more usable intranet. The old intranet made everyday tasks difficult an

    Romance Quotes
They say that people who can remember a famous quotation for every occasion are either highly educated or have no thoughts of their own. Whatever the case may be, keeping in mind the wisdom of other people that has been condensed into a few words can be a good thing.Romance is one area where everyone needs help. No one wants to look like a fool, especially before someone they are trying to woo. Romance is an art, and what better way to learn it than to go directly to the masters! Romantic poets such as Shakespeare, Robert Frost, or P. B. Shelley created some of the best verses to show the conditions of the heart when it is in love. Some use the beauty of nature to narrate the nuances of love and convey an immediate sense of belonging through their words. But perhaps the thirteenth century's Sufiana poets, such as Jallal-u-din Rumi, do it best. They put romance in a completely new spiritual perspective with lines that leave no space to doubt the true feeling of love."The soul sometimes leaves the body, the returns. When someone doesn't believe that, walk back into my house.Like this."RumiRomance thrives on humor and laughter is often the basis of every strong relationship. Humor is what survives when all things are at an end, and it is what keeps romance alive. Humorous romantic quotes need to be quirky while maintaining a certain tastefulness, or else they can offend very easily. These quotes are generally very realistic and often compare love to accidents or diseases, just to make the entire process of romance lighter to deal with. Woody Allen has provided one such example: "I was nauseous and tingly all over. It was either in love or I had smallpox."At times these quotes are shrewd observations of situations in relationships, such as "Love is grand, divorce is a hundred grand." Quite often they relate some very morbid beliefs, but are funny nonetheless like Samuel Johnson's infamous saying, "Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience."
t God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able...". Temptation can mean trial, calamity, or affliction. Accordingly, we should understand that our present day afflictions were also common to the great Bible characters.

David was overwhelmed with grief and sadness, his heart was desolate, and his tears fell all night (Psa. 61:2, 77:2-3, 142:4, and 143:4). Jonah, Jeremiah (Jer. 15), Job, and Elijah (I Kings 19) are other examples. Whenever characters express rejection, loneliness, self-pity, hopelessness, overwhelming grief, and wish they had not been born, it seems they are expressing more than temporary sadness but classic symptoms of major depression. Paul had classic symptoms: his flesh had no rest, he was troubled on all sides, he was cast down, he had fears within, and he despaired of life (II Cor. 1:8 & 7:5-6). Hannah (I Samuel 1) had many of the symptoms of depression and her spiritual leader instantly and incorrectly accused her of a spiritual problem.

Depression Considerations: Each year depression strikes ten million people in the United States. Older Christians have more depression than younger; does this mean that spiritual maturity is of no avail? No, what this indicates is that older people have more biochemical and brain malfunctions as they age; depression is a natural consequence. Similarly, more women (two to three times) have depression than men. Women do not have more spiritual problems than men, but they do process adverse events differently than men, and, they have a complex body chemistry that can get out of balance, both leading to depression. Women tend to take adverse events and internalize them and take the blame—this is a thought-processing problem. Men tend to react to the same events with escapism (sports, TV, sexual obsessions, alcohol); which can later result in heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc.—again, a thought-processing problem but with different results. There is another difference: women tend to feel their depression (sadness/guilt) while men act it out in their behavior (rage, hostility and frustration).2

Causes: Understanding the causes of depression is very helpful to finding the solution. It is rare that there is only one causative agent, generally there are several at work. Listed below (no specific order) are some factors known to contribute to depression:3 4 5

    • nutrient deficiency or excess

    • drugs (prescription, illicit, caffeine)

    • hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

    • hormonal imbalances

    • allergies

    • microbial overgrowths/toxins

    • medical conditions (stroke, heart disease, cancer, Parkinson's, diabetes, thyroid)
