As far as effective treatments are concerned, the ACS notes that biopsies, chemotherapy, and radiation are the most popular procedures done today.

An excisional biopsy allows surgeons to cut through the skin to see if abnormally shaped lymph nodes have formed near the epidermis. If they did happen to form near the skin's surface, local anesthesia is used to disinfect the diseased lymph nodes. On the other hand, an incisional biopsy removes only a small fraction of the diseased lymph nodes located in the chest, abdomen, or intestines. If the internal organs are clinically proven to be infected, general anesthesia, or so-called "deep-sleep medicine," is used for eradication.

Chemotherapy involves pills or liquid drugs that are injected into the blood veins beneath the skin of the lymphatic muscles. The drugs then enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the rest of the body to destroy the most dangerous cells in the lymph nodes.

Although radiation can simply be defined as high-energy particles that destroy cancer cell growth, there are several fields in radiation that Hodgkin's patients can decide on for themselves. External beam radiation localizes the cancerosu lymph nodes from the outside of the body. Extended field radiation can treat the diseased lymph nodes on the inside, albeit in the mantle field located in the neck, chest, and underarms, or in the inverted Y-field located in the spleen, pelvis, and upper abdomen. A combination of both extended fields can be effectively taken under the name of total nodal radiation. There's even what the medical community calls involved field radiation, which is a combination of more conventional radiation and chemotherapy.

"If [a patient] chooses to take the involved field, he or she should realize that the side effects are more severe than the other radiation methods," Dr. Kmetzo cautions.

There are other treatments different from the ones already mentioned, but they are far less common, according to the Cancer Society. Therefore, I suggest you consult with your physician about alternative methods if the most popular forms of treatment out there don't live up to your most healthful expectations.
