Recognizing The Talents in Our Own Midst
According to experts in the field of hiring and training development, there is a great potential within our own companies for talented individuals. Why are we not recognizing those already in our midst? An explanation is: when people are working at lower levels than their management abilities, we can’t see what they can really do.And in this day and age, we have a lot of people laid off from downsized companies who have to take lower level positions for survival. We just don’t recognize who’s working for us or with us. We limit our people by their current titles, functions and departments.Yet getting to know our people is not hard to do – we just need to talk to them! It’s up to management to initiate such talks. Some companies have implemented “Talent Development Programs”. What we really need are “Talent Recognition Programs”. Management needs to take the time to recognize whom we have amongst those employees currently working as “latent talent”.There are scores of qualified, skilled individuals who have had to take on jobs many levels below their business capabilities and experiences because of economic downturn or simply because nobody has recognized their abilities and given them a chance to prove themselves.Dig up your employees’ resumes again, from the interviewer’s forgotten files, and get familiar with t

    Authority Obsessed People
I've been working at a supermarket at a part-time basis and my managers have annoyed/bugged every once in a while, I guess they did it so I wouldn't slacken off. During the last few weeks of my role in the supermarket (some coincidence this is) one of the managers that I wasn't familiar with started picking on me. Of course from my past experience I know people can make mistakes so I gave him a few chances, oh yea did I say his name is Lance? At first I thought he was picking on me because I came from a European background, later I found out he treated majority of the junior staff this way and I finally understood that he was doing it just because he could. It is people like these that can't be pitied. What I did?He had used up his last chance and it was the last day I was working at the store and I had a plan if he was to come up to me looking for a fight. Nothing happened up until I was going home where he asked me a question and I unknowingly lied (due to fatigue), it wasn't a big deal, it was only an empty box that I had forgotten to put away. As I passed by the box I realized what was going to happen and what I was supposed to do. After 5 seconds of seeing the box Lance too saw the box and called out my name in a loud manner. Of course what worse torture is there for someone who is obsessed with authority to not get a response

    Medical Billing - Customized Reports
In this installment of medical billing and your DME software, we're going to take a look at customized reports. This is an area that most billing companies have a lot of problems with because it involves a little bit of programming and creativity. Hopefully, this review will give you a few tips on how to get the most out of your customized reports. It's great to be able to bill your patients and let's face it, that's where the money comes from. But how are you going to know how much money you've made and how profitable your medical billing business is without reports to show you? Well, fortunately for the medical billing company, most DME software packages come with a module that they call customized reports, or something along those lines.Usually, these modules will come with certain stock reports such as sales, accounts receivable and so on. A decent piece of software will usually provide you with about five or six reports that for the most part will give you all the information that you'll need in order to find out how profitable your business has been. But what if these reports just aren't enough for you? What if you'd like to get a report that not only shows you total sales, but breaks it down by salesperson in your organization or by medical carrier. What do you do then? What if you simply don't like the way the output of the repo

Never Say It Can't Be Done
I ran across an interesting article in Wired magazine this week that told the tale of Kolo Soro, an elementary school teacher in the tiny village of Tomono in the northern Ivory Coast of Africa. This is an area so remote and void of technology that for generations communication between villages has been done by tying notes to rocks and having passing trucks toss them out the window at pre-described locations.Kolo Soro changed all that when he purchased a cellphone during a visit to a larger city and found that if he held the phone seven feet off the floor in a corner of his bedroom he could get a decent signal. Being an enterprising young man he hung the phone on the wall, hooked up an earbud, and started charging his fellow villagers 80 cents per minute to make calls. He earned $200 the first month.Being a smart entrepreneur Kolo plowed those profits back into his business. He bought a PlayStation 2 game console and connected it to a 13-inch color TV and charged 10 to 20 cents to play games. He made $20 in the first three days. Now I’ve worked with some pretty sharp entrepreneurs over the years, but in my mind Kolo Soro leaves them all in the dirt. He lives in a tiny African village where the average income is probably no more than a few dollars a month, yet he has founded a thriving enterprise that continues to grow. Kolo’s next purch

    Got Motor Skills?
After generations of error, fifty-years of proof convinces some skeptics.Fact: The faster you read, the better your comprehension.Mrs. Harrison, my 3rd grade teacher, hammered into our numbskulls – If you want to understand what you are reading – always read it slowly. She could only teach us what she knew and had been taught in Teachers College. For one hundred years teachers were trained to get students to slow down for better comprehension. It was intuitive and no one had the nerve to question the dictum – slow-equals-better.In 1952 Evelyn Wood requested university linguistic researchers to test her principle that the faster-you-read, the greater your comprehension; she was hooted down. She proposed that speed reading created a context for the text, while focusing on a single word, phrase or sentence, was the basis for subvocalization, regressions, and loss of long term memory.Speed reading doubles attention, and adds up to 15% to comprehension, triples the amount of learning.Context reading requires speed, and that contradicts the status quo.It took over 50 years for this counterintuitive research to trickle down to 25% of teachers. The other 75% still teach Mrs. Harrison’s intuitive system of purposeful-slowness.Dig ThisThe QUERTY keyboard was created to slow down the speed of

Three Ways To Jumpstart Your IT Career
We all get stuck in ruts from time to time, and that happens on the job as well. You've thought about doing something different with your information technology career, but just haven't quite gotten around to it yet. Sound familiar? You can make 2006 the best year yet for your IT career. There are several simple steps you can take to accelerate your career - but you have to take the step, not just think about it!Learn something new. One of the biggest reasons you get tired of a job is that you're doing the same thing every day. If you happen to love what you do, that's great, but if not it's time to break out of the box. Besides, learning a new skill adds value to your career. If you've been doing server work for a long time, take the time to learn some Cisco skills. If you're an Exchange specialist, learn some Linux skills.Get certified. Not very many of us get to work for the same company for the rest of our IT careers. The only job security is the security you give yourself, and one of the ways to get that security is to add professional certifications to your resume. Certifications such as the MCSE and CCNA get you noticed and help you stand out from the crowd. Ask yourself what your resume would look like if you were laid off today, and then take steps to improve yourself and your professional standing.Be prepared to ta
