Has Your Business Had a Recent Check-up?
How is the health of your business? Take a quick pulse by looking at the following areas:1. Financials - key items to look at are your balance sheet, income (or profit & loss) statement and cash flow statement. Is your equity, profit margin and cash flow growing? If not, why not? At one of my recent photography assignments, a senior vice president was very impressed with the amount of gear that I brought with me and how prepared I seemed to be. He noticed how I planned for the unexpected by bringing redundant pieces of equipment. He asked if I did anything else besides photography. I informed him that those areas that make me a very successful photographer, creativity, balance, leadership and personal development, also help organizations provide for increased passion, happier employees, increased profitability and a more balanced workforce. He was intrigued.

He runs the company 'college' that trains their employees in those areas that are specific to his industry. While he said that the majority of the programs are technical, he thought that adding one of my programs would 'round out' the course work. According to the Aspen Institute's Maureen Conway, coauthor on a report on the benefits of targeted training programs, " changes in technology and in the general business environment have compelled many companies to increase their investment in training in order to remain competitive." Moment of Truth or Moment of Impact
Moments of truth are all those times when customers experience and evaluate your service. Work hard, do a good job, and customers will come back for more.Moments of impact are those rare moments when someone goes way above the call of duty, stretches the envelope far beyond the stamp, innovates and takes action in unexpected ways that are valued, appreciated…and remembered.A client at a seminar handed me this note: ‘Last night, 10 minutes before departure at the airport, I found my car and house keys still with me, which means my wife would have been locked out of the house. I passed them to the Singapore Airlines

What You Say, and How You Say It, Affects Bottom Line Quality
Unless you start doing “it” today, all the quality checks in the world won’t save your company from a major stumble. "It" is right speech. As a quality manager, I like to imagine that if everybody does their job and quality is high at every stage in the production process, I’ll enjoy a smooth operation and get satisfied customers as a result. But experience has taught me that a mean spirit can infect and poison the work place when people don’t watch what they say.Mean comments by coworkers about managers, snide asides about other employees, managers who gossip about recently terminated employees, supervisors who don’t co

Guarantees In Marketing And How You Can Use Them To Increase Your Profits - Response
All too often people overlook the importance of guarantees in their marketing. Guarantees perform some basic functions in business, but they can be used far more effectively in marketing your product as well. Typically, you will see standard guarantees like “Double Your Money Back” or “100% Satisfaction Guaranteed”. These types of guarantees are common and serve the purpose of easing the prospects mind, and allowing them to move forward with their purchase. While these guarantees are useful you can use them in much better ways. First, I would recommend using a stronger or more unique guarantee. For instance, “If you

Innovation Management - IBM Opens Lid On Its Treasure Chest
IBM, which registered 3248 patents last year, has decided that sharing technology can sometimes be more profitable than jealously guarding its property rights on patents, copyrights and trade secrets (Herald Tribune, April 11 2005).International Business Machines have come to the above conclusion 205 years after the invention of electric light – thus clearly illustrating that even the 19th largest company in the world (fortune.com) with a market capitalization on $141 billion (nasdaq.com) is still only learning about creativity and innovation.Of course the issue of control is important but a quick history lesson i

New ideas are what keep a company in business. With this study in mind, I thought that I had a real opportunity to add value to this company.

I telephoned the person responsible for the content of this organization's training all the while referencing the senior vice president who had asked me to call. I mentioned the value of my programs and how it is important to introduce a concept like balance early, so that employee's will practice it from the beginning of their employment or careers. There was an uncomfortable pause on the phone, and then I was told that this company's first order of business was to become more professional and not focus on 'soft skills' like work/life balance. My contact said, "We don't want to add any non-technical training; rather we want to motivate our employees to become more professional by working harder and by working longer hours."

I was taken aback. This was exactly the opposite approach that I would have expected, but it seems to be what is still happening in some American Companies. According to the Wall Street Journal , many of the nation's largest retailers such
