    The internet marketing community often throw terms and phrases around loosely in describing certain types of websites and what they are used for. Take for instance the word minisite. From the looks and the origin of the word, is easy to see that it's a miniature website, but what is that? We in the internet marketing community assume that you the reader know exactly what we are talking about. This jargon talk is often used by people in any industry and in any market where there is a certain language that pertains to tasks or objects within that field.

    But let's breakdown for a second the terms that I've stated here, since this blog is primarily focused on minisites as a way of doing business online.

    1. Minisite - is a general term for a short website that has a sole objective to make your readership do something that you the minisite creator has in mind. It can do numerous of things as far as marketing, but the main meaning is that it's a website that is trying to do a specific task

Landing Pages - back when search engines didn't penalize for having these pages, its primarily function was to act as, well a landing page, with the intent to redirect its readers to an offer page or a subscription page. Many of the marketers had hundreds of these and even mainstream offline companies would hire marketer's to create these so-called landing pages to redirect their visitors to a page that basically hard sold it's products or subscription newsletter

    3. Squeeze Page - is a minisite that has the primary objective to capturing a name and email address. This technique is important because once a visitor turned into a subscriber, the owner of the squeeze page can then market and promote those products through email. With the rising amounts of unauthorized emails (SPAM), online marketers and businesses had to capture these potential customers in a fashion which was more acceptable to the general public. Therefore these squeeze pages where usually theme based about a particular topic, and because they showed an interest in that specific topic, the marketer than promoted products inline with the theme of that squeeze page

    4. Sales pages - is probably the easiest to figure out. As its name suggest, it is a direct sales page that its primary objective is to sell products and services. If you are in the marketing arena, than you've probably seen tons of them. But if you are new to starting a business online or simply unaware of this practice, these minisites are placed on the internet to sell products

    Again, I'm not bringing groundbreaking news to the marketing community as most marketer's know exactly what is meant by minisites. But in case you didn't know, I've provided these short explanation here for you.

    The main advantage as to why marketer's use these short sites, is that they are easy to create and when done properly, can be highly effective. But the logic behind this doesn't add up. Sure if you already have connections with other people who have a large list, then using a standalone site works fine. It probably can be successful if you are marketing techniques or more direct like ads placements on other sites when the intent to drive them to your minisite. I'm sure there are many marketer's who do this already, but logically, and maybe for newcomers starting out, it doesn't make much sense.

    If search engines like content, then wouldn't the simple answer be provide relevant, tightly focused content on a specific niche? I believe it would.

    Another area where minisites might not be as effective is when they are setup to do more than one thing. Now this isn't the hard and fast rule, but seeing minisites that have other links for a visitor to click on, waters down the possibility of that visitor doing what you the marketer wanted that minisite to do. Has it been done before, probably so, and again, this isn't the bible on why minisites are effective. But it would seem that minisites would be effective by just focusing on one topic and for the minisite to have one objective.
