There are a lot of strange things us mere mortals of the IM world never grasp or understand. We have our mind set in one direction, and we stick to it. I'll tell you a story that I've heard whispered in the playground which might get you thinking in a different direction.

Once upon a time there was a Mr X. Mr X was no ordinary guy. He was one smart cookie. He loved selling stuff and he was really good at it. But he knew he could do more, so much more. One day, Mr X heard about something that changed his life for ever. A friend saw that Mr X had potential, and decided to introduce him to the SuperFamousSmart club (JV club). Once Mr X learned that the SuperFamousSmart club was a place for people that are super smart and hence famous, he knew he wanted in. So, Mr X joined the SuperFamousSmart club.

Over the coming weekes and months, Mr X progressed through the SuperFamousSmart club. He went from foot soldier to captain, until he was nominated for general. By that time made so many club friends who happened to be generals and captains. He had built a great fan base ( list ). What's more, his friends ( the generals and captains ) had fans of their own. He just knew he was powerful.

One day, Mr X came up with a cool product. He just knew that this product was IT. This product would make him Super Rich. He could not fail.

Being a member of the SuperFamousSmart club, he knew just exactly how to promote and sell this product.

Mr X knew that if he just put his product on the shelf, next to all the other products out there, he would make ok sales. If it were someone else in Mr X's shoes, they would have done just that. They would have pocketed the sales money and been happy.

But this is not what Mr X was after. He didn't join the SuperFamousSmart club to be a mere mortal. He didn't want a measly steady cash flow. He wanted the big bux, the motherload.

So, the first thing Mr X did, was make up a good story. A story worth believing and a story so close to the hearts of mere mortals, that they would just eat it up. Mr X knew that without a story, he had nothing. He might as well put his product on the sales shelf.

Once a story was in place, Mr X pulled out all the stops. He contracted all his friends from his SuperFamousSmart club, got them to stand next to him ( testimonial ) and back him up as he made his sales pitch. His friends would of course get a cut of the pie when the time was right ( affiliate sales ).

Mr X stood there, with his SuperFamousSmart club friends, and told everyone how cool his product was. He was on fire with all guns blazing. Once he was done, his SuperFamousSmart friends knew what to do. They went from one market to another, re-telling Mr X's story ( newsletters ). And so, mouth to mouth, marketer to marketer, mere mortal to mere mortal, word spread of this cool idea that Mr X came up with ( viral marketing ).
