Well, it may be too early to tell for sure, but my best guess is that it is going to have a big impact on general types of informational search. How is shakes out in the long term for SEO, remains to be seen. The impact could be quite dramatic. I am a little concerned at this point, that it might complicate SEO Strategy and make our efforts more challenging.

Right now, the results are only beginning to change certain types of searches. For example, if you search for the word “Gorilla” you will get a series of results on basic Gorilla information, followed by “Gorillaz” results, which is a virtual band, followed by news results for Gorilla.

Frankly, I’m not very pleased to see alternative spelling results listed in the results search. I appreciate the spelling suggestions that Google makes at the top of the page, as long as they ask “Is this what you are looking for”, and it gives you a choice. I would prefer that Google not make misspelling assumptions for me, based on frequency of requests, and then display the results together with the correctly spelled results.

Each of the results sections mentioned for Gorilla listed above is separated by a thin blue line, to let you know that the search results have been categorized. This is not a bad idea, but it remains to be seen how press releases, articles, and other types on line information are prioritized.

There are at least 7 general types of information that Google indexes, Web site pages – (articles included), news, maps, images, audio, video, books, etc.. If each one of these types of information is categorized and prioritized in a separate section, the traditional organic search results will get pushed down to subsequent pages.

This is certainly something to watch for in search engine results over the weeks and months to come. In the interest of the ever evolving search for the most relevant information, Google may have complicated SEO Strategy and the job of webmasters and SEO practitioners.
