Drug Addiction: The Individual's Ability to Choose

In their unsuccessful effort to fulfill their needs, no matter what behavior they choose, all addicted individuals have a common characteristic; they all deny the reality of the world around them. Some break the law, denying the rules of society; some claim their neighbors are plotting against them, denying the improbability of such behavior. Some are afraid of crowded places, close quarters, airplanes, and even elevators, yet they freely admit the irrationality of their fears. Millions abuse alcohol to blot out the inadequacy they feel, but that need not exist if they could learn to be different; and for too many individuals choose suicide rather than face the reality that they could solve their problems by more responsible behavior. Whether it is a partial denial, or the total blotting out of all reality like the chronic-addicted individual in the state hospital, the denial of some or all reality is common to all addicted individuals. Intervention will be successful when they are able to give up denying the world and recognize that reality not only exists but that they must fulfill their needs within the framework of reality.

Signs of Alcoholism

One of the hardest things to do is to recognize that you have a drinking problem, which may be a result of denial, pride, or even the fact that your dependence may have already clouded your judgment. Unfortunately, not being able to recognize that you have a problem can have very negative effects, which includes losing your life as some of the physical effects of alcoholism have proven to be fatal. However, answering the question on whether you have a drinking problem can be made simple as long as you are able to recognize if you exhibit some of the warning signs characterize alcoholism.

Alcohol Treatment Programs

In the United States, around seventy thousand Americans receive alcohol rehabilitation treatment on any given day. Due to the fact that alcoholism affects a large number of people, rehabilitation centers are constantly developing modes of treatment that will ensure long-term sobriety for their patients. These treatments are usually combinations of medication and therapy, which help alcoholics to stop drinking and prevent a relapse in the future. However, the effectiveness of these treatments vary for different people as some alcoholics may have specific needs that only certain types of treatment can address.

Christian Drug Treatment Centers

Drug addiction is considered a disease that can be cured through medical intervention. However, even with proper medical attention and psychiatric therapies, several patients regress into their addictions. Failure to recover is sometimes attributed to poor follow-through programs that should include reintegration into society and family support.

America's Breadbasket: Crystal Meth

We have property legislation regarding mold, and disclosure covering asbestos and radon, but only voluntary warnings concerning exposure to contaminants left behind after a meth lab has been dismantled. Home labs are vanishing, but not the meth!

Smoking Cessation in Adolescent Smokers

There is little information regarding outcome expectations and self-efficacy for quitting smoking in adolescents. For adolescents who are current smokers, the more essential outcomes motivating change in behavior may be the perception of positive and negative consequences of stopping smoking, since those outcomes may be more predictive of future smoking status among current smokers.

Married to an Alcoholic: 7 Steps to Helping Them Get Sober

You have no verbal power over the alcoholic. What you do have control over is your actions. What you do and say to the alcoholic will have a direct affect on whether or not they will continue drinking or not.

Alcoholic Anonymous

There are many different groups of people that have been part of the alcoholic anonymous organizations. These are organizations that people are going to go for help when they do not want people to know they are going.

Alcohol Abuse and the Elderly: The Hidden Population

Almost half of the admissions to substance abuse treatment among people age 50 and up were specifically for alcohol abuse. Men accounted for four of every five of these alcohol-related admissions. Although alcohol and substance abuse is statistically at epidemic proportions among the elderly, it remains for the most part unreported, undiagnosed, and often ignored completely. The reasons that substance abuse bt the elderly goes undetected are many, but primarily because they are no longer active in mainstream society and there is simply no one around to notice. The elderly are less likely to come in contact with the law; such as driving under the influence, having traffic accident, or causing problems in the community. And since many are retired, there is very little chance their alcohol abuse will cause them to lose a job or career goals.

Drug Rehab Programs
